Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Cardoso worked for many years in the finance market, and has always been a great art lover, mainly painting and photography. In 2009, he moves to NYC to take care of his daughter Maria Luiza, who was going to do a surgery. To support her daughter, who used to love to paint, Claudio begins his first steps as a painter and very soon his admiration for arts develops into passion a full time.
In 2012, he begins taking painting classes and learning some techniques with the plastic artist and teacher Luiz Badia at Atelier Baluarte, where Claudio keeps a studio to work and create together with his friends. It was in this environment, working with other artists, that Claudio starts to develop his talent, inspirations and compositions, always supervised by his teacher.
In 2014, Claudio starts a course at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, with the great colourist, friend and teacher José Maria Dias da Crus. It was during this period that he identifies the painters Gerhard Richter and Jackson Pollock as his main references. During the course of time as a student in Parque Lage and his evolution as an artist, Claudio has his debut by exhibiting his paintings in some important art galleries and art events in the United States, such as Latin American Art Fair (2014), Miami Art Fair – Art Basel (2014) and the Creative Mischief Exhibition - National Academy Museum & School in NYC (2015/ 2016).
After a successful start in the art world, Claudio decides to deepen his knowledge with the Director of the National Academy Museum & School NYC, Maurizio Pellegrin, whom Claudio considers his master. Due to the lack of space and a studio in NYC where he could work and create his paintings, Claudio Cardoso embraces the cosmopolitan caos of the streets of Manhattan and begins to dedicate his time to one of his passions, photography. This is when the artist starts to transfer to his photos the Richter’s squeeze technique that have influenced him so much as a painter.
To create the same effects in the photography, Claudio uses the camera in low speed, taking advantage of the imperfections left in the photo to create the effect of movement. Since then, his line of work aims to explore the imagination of audience, creating life in an inanimate and static object like a photo. The objective is to arouse the senses and imagination of whoever sees the photography and make every person to have a different perception of movement. From these experiences in the streets of NYC, it is released the first sequence of photos entitled “os ciclistas” – “the cyclists”. For Claudio, this series of work is what officially marks the beginning of his career as a photographer and his object of study, the creation of movement.
In 2015, however, Claudio travels to Italy integrated in the Academy Abroad program, promoted by his teacher Maurizio Pellegrin, to appreciate the Venice Biennale and to participate during one week in an immersion of “Intensive Creation in Studio” at Lake Como. Because of his experience in Italy, the artist begins in November 2016 Long Term Art Course in the National Academy Museum & School – NYC with Professor Pellegrin, where he begins to develop some interventions in the images in motion. The combination of these two techniques is consolidated in the piece The Corner (2,20x2m), exhibited during the 6th Creative Mischief Exhibition NYC in 2017.
In Portugal expose for the first time in 2018 in the Gallery of the Association José Afonso as the theme "Freedom", a photographic approach to the "natural" life in Lisbon, exposure that remains until the end of March 2019.
Claudio Cardoso currently lives in Portugal and is working full time with his team to produce a new exhibitions, last has entitled “Movement”, released in Lisbon during this July. 20219.

Nascido no Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Cardoso trabalhou muitos anos na área financeira, e sempre foi um grande apreciador das artes, principalmente da pintura e da fotografia. Em 2009, muda-se para NYC para acompanhar a cirurgia e recuperação da filha, Maria Luiza, que gostava muito de pintar. Para dar suporte à filha, Claudio dá os primeiros passos na pintura e logo a admiração pelas artes se desenvolve em paixão a tempo inteiro.
Em 2012 inicia aulas práticas de técnicas de pintura com o Artista Plástico e Professor Luiz Badia no Atelier Baluarte, onde possui e faz questão de preservar um espaço para trabalhar e estar juntos dos amigos que ali se mantêm até hoje, sempre fazendo arte. Neste contexto desenvolve junto com outros alunos e artistas do atelier suas inspirações e composições sempre com o suporte e atenção do seu professor.
Em 2014 inicia um curso na Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, no Rio de Janeiro, com o grande colorista, amigo e professor José Maria Dias da Crus e define como as suas principais referências, os pintores Gerhard Richter e Jackson Pollock. Na sequência do tempo como aluno no Parque Lage e da sua evolução como artista, Claudio faz o seu debut expondo as suas telas em importantes galerias e eventos de arte nos Estados Unidos, tais como: Latin American Art Fair (2014), Miami Art Fair – Art Basel (2014) e o Creative Mischief Exhibition - National Academy Museum & School em NYC (2015/ 2016).
Após a bem-sucedida entrada no mundo das artes como artista, Claudio decide aprimorar os seus conhecimentos com o Diretor da National Academy Museum & School NYC, Maurizio Pellegrin, a quem considera o seu mestre. Na ausência de um estúdio em NYC onde pudesse trabalhar e criar as suas telas, Claudio Cardoso toma posse do caos cosmopolita das ruas de Manhattan e começa a dedicar-se à sua outra paixão, a fotografia. É então, a partir daqui, que o artista começa a transpor para a sua fotografia as técnicas de squeeze de Richter, que tanto o influenciaram como pintor.
A busca por efeitos semelhantes na fotografia dá-se usando a câmera em baixa velocidade, aproveitando-se dos resíduos deixados na fotografia para provocar um efeito de movimento na obra. Desde então a sua linha de trabalho passa por explorar a imaginação do espectador, criando vida num objeto inanimado e estático, como a fotografia. O objetivo é despertar a sensibilidade e a imaginação de quem vê a fotografia e fazer com que cada pessoa tenha uma ideia de movimento diferente. Dessa experiência nas ruas de NYC, sai a primeira sequência de fotos intitulada “os ciclistas”, que marca para o artista o inicio da sua carreira como fotógrafo e o seu objeto de estudo e trabalho, a criação do movimento.
Já em 2015, Claudio vai para a Itália integrado no programa Academy Abroad, promovido pelo professor Maurizio Pellegrin, para prestigiar a Bienal de Arte de Veneza e participar numa semana em “Estúdio Intensivo de Criação” no Lago Como. Por consequência da experiência em Itália, o artista inicia em novembro de 2016 o Long Term Art Course na National Academy Museum & School - NYC com o Professor Pellegrin, onde começa a desenvolver o trabalho de intervenção nas imagens em “movimento”. A combinação dessas duas técnicas consolida-se com a obra The Corner (2,20x2m), exposta no 6th Creative Mischief Exhibition NYC em 2017.
Em Portugal expõem pela primeira vez em 2018 na Galeria da Associação José Afonso, como o tema “Liberdade”, uma abordagem fotográfica à vida “natural” na cidade de Lisboa, exposição que permanece até ao final de Março de 2019.
Claudio Cardoso atualmente reside em Portugal e está a trabalhar com a sua equipa de produção e criação, no desenvolvimento de novas exposições, a ultima “Movimento”, foi exibida em Lisboa em Julho de 2019.
